Reverse Aging News Anti Aging Medicine NewsletterLast month the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology revised their cholesterol treatment guidelines for the first time in more than decade. The new protocols call for the increased use of statins, drugs which block a liver enzyme that produces cholesterol, which can narrow or harden arteries. Studies have showed that statins reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death from cardiovascular disease by about a third, and can reduce the recurrence of a stroke or heart attack by even more.

The new guidelines call for statin use by anybody with
• verifiable atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
• cholesterol levels of more than 190 mg per deciliter composed of primarily low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
• diabetes and an LDL cholesterol level of 70 mg per deciliter or higher, or
• a risk in the next decade of contracting atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease of 7.5 percent or greater.

The guidelines even came with an online calculator for patients to estimate risk.

Harvard Medical School’s Dr. Nancy Cook and Dr. Paul M. Ridker criticized the calculator for overstating the threats. The problem might have developed because the analyzed data was collected more than a decade ago when more people smoked leading to a higher frequency of heart attack and stroke.

Most people tolerate statins well, but there can be side effects including, aches, rashes and insomnia. Last year the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required that the statins Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor and Vytorin carry warming labels about the drugs increasing risks of Type 2 diabetes and memory loss.

Full implementation of the guidelines would lead to millions of more people taking statins than would not be medically warranted. a boon to the pharmaceutical companies that produce statins. As it is, according to Forbes Magazine, the statin Lipitor is the best selling drug of all time.

Remember that before taking a statin, you can cut way back on sources of saturated fat like dairy products and red meats. Chicken eggs are high in cholesterol, but most dietary cholesterol is not converted to your own body's cholesterol. Still, the Mayo Clinic recommends keeping egg yolk consumption to four or under a week. The best way of deciding whether to take statins is through a frank discussion with your physician about your diet and lifestyle, not by plugging a set of numbers into an online calculator.

Here’s welcome news for those who think roasting chestnuts is a big part of any holiday celebration: according to a new Harvard study, people who regularly ate an ounce a day of walnuts, cashews, pecans, almonds, or other tree nuts had a 20 percent lower risk of dying compared to those who did not eat nuts.

Published in the November 21st edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, the study surveyed more than118,000 healthy volunteers over three decades. Over the course of the study nut eaters were
• 25 percent less likely to die from heart disease,
• 20 percent less likely to die from diabetes
• 20 percent less likely to die from lung diseases
• 10 percent less likely to die from cancer.

They also lived longer, even if they were overweight.

“The reduction in mortality was substantial,” said senior study author Charles S. Fuchs, MD, MPH Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School. “I think eating nuts is comparable to other potentially beneficial lifestyle measures like exercise and avoiding obesity and trans fats.”

Also found in cold, deepwater fish, and flax seeds, omega 3s can lower cholesterol levels naturally, and reduce inflammation throughout the body.

Rich in ellagic and oleic acids, pecans are bursting with the most antioxidants off all nuts, more than 19 vitamins and minerals including carotenes (vitamin A), B complex (especially folic acid and thiamine), vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and zinc.

Despite their qood qualities, remember that nuts are high in calories. To avoid weight gain cut back elsewhere. New England Journal of Medicine editor-in-chief Dr. Jeffrey Drazen commented, “If you think adding almonds or walnuts to a lifestyle of sloth and gluttony will help you live longer, you’re probably nuts.”

Superfoods for Winter

During the darkest days of the year, we celebrate two festivals of light, Hanukkah and Christmas, but summer produce gets harder to find. These superfoods will help keep you healthy all winter.

Pomegranates were part of the story of winter for generations of ancient Greeks. Persephone, the beautiful daughter of Demeter, the harvest goddess, was kidnapped Pluto, the King of Hades to be his bride. When Demeter learned where her daughter was she appealed to Zeus, King of the Gods. He took pity on her and decreed that if Persephone had not eaten anything in the underworld, she would be free to return. Alas, desperately hungry after days underground, she had eaten six pomegranate seeds, which would hence forth force her underground for months every year causing the onset of winter.

Today, those seeds and surrounding juicy flesh are ready to nourish you, since they are rich in antioxidant tannins and flavonoids that help fight cancer and inflammation. Pomegranate extracts in vitro have inhibited the growth of breast, prostate, colon and lung cancer cells. In animal studies, consumption of pomegranate extract inhibited the growth of lung, skin, colon and prostate tumors.

Pumpkins, carrots, and sweet potatoes get their orange color from beta-carotene, thought to have anti cancer properties. Pumpkins also have antimicrobial action inhibiting the growth of the Candida fungus that causes yeast infections and diaper rash.

Apples contain antioxidants and pectin a soluble fiber. In a 2012 study people who ate an apple a day for a month lowered their LDL cholesterol. Regular apple eaters have been found to have fewer issues with cancer, diabetes, and gastrointestinal problems.
